Job Description

Carthage’s arts events — from “Ages to Ages” to “Xanadu” — will bring world-class guest artists to campus and into the community. Mark your calendars for events taking place this fall.

Visual Art Exhibits

The sculptural ceramics exhibit, “Ages to Ages,” can be viewed in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art through Friday, Oct. 11. The works address the position of contemporary ceramics within the long history of human interaction with clay. The gallery is open later on Thursdays!

Later in October, the exhibit “Fibrecate” applies fiber-based processes in an unexpected way, to traditional and contemporary paintings and sculptural forms. Attend the opening reception at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 and the artist talk at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Senior exhibitions, showcasing work by Carthage students, begin Friday, Dec. 6.

Music Concerts

Alumni and families will want to attend the traditional Homecoming Concert with performances by the Carthage Philharmonic, the Carthage Choir, and a Carthage Choir Alumni Chorus at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. Enjoy the concert in the A. F. Siebert Chapel or from home through our livestream.

Hear Americana, bluegrass, folk, and classical music genres all in one concert when the nationally recognized Invoke String Quartet appears at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in the A. F. Siebert Chapel. Get your tickets now

Several student performances round out the fall music calendar. Events take place different days of the week to accommodate different schedules. All of the following concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 16: Winds Orchestra

Monday, Oct. 21: Carthage Trio

Saturday, Oct. 26: Fall Choral Concert

Saturday, Nov. 16: Fall Philharmonic Concert

Wednesday, Nov. 20: Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble (Don’t miss this performance when the percussion takes center stage!)

On Stage

Students make up the casts of Carthage’s award-winning theatre programs. When Carthage takes the stage, the performances exceed expectations!

Oct. 4-6, 10-12: “Xanadu”
Many of the songs from “Xanadu” became hits when the musical and movie first debuted. “Xanadu” follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time — the first roller disco! (Hey, it’s 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds.

Oct 12-14: “Eleemosynary”
Directed by Emily Halfmann ’25, “Eleemosynary” represents a beautiful tale of love, loss, generational trauma, generational relationships, and what it is to be brilliant and gifted. “Eleemosynary” provides a relatable look into a nontraditional family home that has been fractured from within.

Nov. 1-3, Nov. 7-9: “Life Cycle of a Star”
Since 2008, Carthage Theatre has commissioned playwrights of prominence from around the country and the world to create original plays for our department and work closely with students to bring them to life. The 16th work of the New Play Initiative was written by Ali Viterbi and will be directed by Professor Herschel Kruger.

“Life Cycle of a Star” presents the friendship of Anna and Lily “against the life of the stars,” taking us on a journey from prom to the nursing home, on cross-country road trips and intergalactic space expeditions.

Nov. 19-21: “To the Growth Edge”
“To The Growth Edge” explores what is just beyond familiarity, comfort, and one’s grasp. Dancing to our growth edges honors these uncharted and complex spaces, and in doing so, reveals our capacity to be surprised by our own possibility.
